What is Ayurveda

the science of life

Ayurveda is considered the world’s oldest holistic medical science which originated in India over 5000 years ago.  This vast healing science helps individuals find their own unique balance of perfect health.  It identifies root causes of disease and provides the tools for each individual to adjust and restore their natural state of health.

Both ancient and timeless, Ayurvedic medicine has been teaching civilizations of the East the importance of balanced body mind and spirit for thousands of years. Ayur-Veda, which literally translated into the ”science of life” has been gaining popularity as our culture begins to realize the importance of prevention rather than ultimatums.

Everything in nature is made from the 5 elements: Space, Air, Fire, Water and Earth.  Ayurveda helps us to understand the connection between our bodies and nature since each one of us is a microcosm of nature.  The basis of Ayurvedic teachings is the 5 elements theory which is also the foundation for all of Ayurveda’s diagnostic and treating modalities.

The Doshas

These 5 basic elements of space, air, fire, water and earth manifest in the human body and combine into three functional principles or energies known as the tridosha. The space and air elements compose the air principle called Vata dosha, fire and water elements make up the fire principle called Pitta dosha and the earth and water elements manifest into the water principle called Kapha dosha.

The three doshas, Vata, Pitta and Kapha are present in all of us in various proportions and are responsible for creating our unique differences.  In the body the three doshas rule the biological and psychological processes of our body, mind and consciousness. Ayurveda offers deep understanding of the individual and this is mostly based on the study of the elements and patterns of energy present in each person.

Each dosha will be aggravated by food and lifestyle choices with its similar qualities and will be balanced by food and lifestyle choices with its opposite qualities.
